SEL
Facilities

Available equipments in  Structural Engineering Laboratory SEL includes a few types of hydraulic testing machines for structural testing.

Grettir sterki (Grettir the Strong)
This machine was designed and built by students at Reykjavik University. It has been used for the testing of beams subjected to vertical load and structural bars and connections in tension. It is equipped with a hydraulic jack which is capable of testing specimens in compression to 500 kN and to 300 kN in tension. The base plate is fixed and the upper crosshead moves to apply tension or compression to the specimen. Maximum size of specimens is 1200 mm in length and 450 mm in height.

Eiríkur rauði (Erik the Red)
This machine has been used primarily for testing of concrete columns in compression. It is equipped with a hydraulic jack which can provide vertical load up to 2000 kN. The base plate is fixed and the upper crosshead moves downward and it is possible to test columns of 1540 mm height and up to 600 mm width.ErikRaudi

Hallgerður langbrók

This reaction frame is 8 m horizontal and 4 m vertical. This frame has been used for various testing, for example: Testing of wooden wall elements resisting horizontal force, testing of wodden columns up to 6 meter long under axial load and  also used for prestressed  BFRP concrete beams. It is equipped with a hydraulic jack which is capable of testing specimens in compression to 150 kN and to 100 kN in tension.Langbrok

Hydraulic pumps
The laboratory is equipped with few hydraulic pumps with a pressure capacity of 400- 700 bar.

Fork-lift

A fork-lift with 5 ton lift capacity is used to move test specimens around the lab.ForkLift
