SCS Interdisciplinary Lectures Series - Sverrir Ólafsson - Stability and scalability of wireless communication systems

SverrirThe next talk in our Interdisciplinary Lectures Series is entitled "Stability and scalability of wireless communication systems" and will be delivered by Professor Sverrir Ólafsson (School of Business) on Thursday, 12 November, at 12:00 in room K5 in Kringlan.

Abstract

The deployment of wireless networks has in recent years been increasing at a very rapid rate. In fact, today wireless technologies present the most popular means to access the internet.  As the number of wireless stations increases the density of access points needs to be increased to provide the required coverage. This however leads to increased interference which can lead to serious performance degradation.

In the talk we will discuss ways to manage the complexities associated with the increasing densities of wireless access points. We will consider dynamic power control and adaptive channel selection as the primary means to enhance the utilisation of the wireless spectrum. The unregulated usage of the spectrum implies that centralized optimisation of the spectrum is not feasible. The management of these large network systems can therefore only be based in local and distributed information. We will discuss the performance of dynamic distributed power control and channel optimisation based on concepts from evolutionary game theory.
