Google Summer of Code
We would lika to draw your attention to the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program. It is a global program that offers student developers stipends ($4500) to write code for various open source software projects. The main page for the project can be found here. FAQ on the main page is a good place to start for info.
This year Google accepted 150 "mentoring institutions/organisations". Examples of which are MySQL, The Perl Foundation, haskell.org, Ubuntu, and the Apertium Project.
The Icelandic Centre for Language Technology is currently contributing to the Apertium (Machine Translation) Project. Examples of project ideas in the Apertium Project can be found here.
Most other organisations have compiled a list of project ideas. Students can access project ideas by:
1) following the link "List participating institutions" from the main page
2) selecting a particular institution from the list (e.g. MySQL)
3) following the link "Idea list" which appears at the bottom of the page (e.g. http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/SummerOfCode2009Ideas)
