Prófessor Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde við Háskólann í Bergen flytur erindið: "The Franciscan that Lay a New Foundation for Norwegian and Icelandic Society - The Legislation of King Magnus the Lawmender"
Description:
Prince Magnus followed the teaching in the Franciscan abbey in Bergen. He only became king because of the accidental death of his older brother. He is the sole Norwegian king in the Middle Ages that never fought a war. His great triumph was instead a reform of Norwegian and Icelandic Society through legislation. The Norwegian Code of 1274, the Code of the towns of 1276, the Administrative Code of 1277 and the Icelandic Code of 1281 were the most successful legislative effort in Europe in the Middle Ages. All fields of law was reformed, the law reform lasted for hundreds of years, and the codes were widely spread throughout the realm. An impressive trace of the legislation is that groups without political power, like women and the poor, had their legal situation improved. Another major achievement was finding the balance between centralized power and local participation in governance. Hence, the legislation of King Magnus the Lawmender deserves far more attention than it has been given.
