Title: The value of Doppler lidar to enhance aviation safety in Iceland - a joint PhD research project between Reykjavik University, Icelandic Meteorological Office and ISAVIA
Supervisor: David C. Finger

The Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) systems have been used widely in the aviation sector to enhancing aviation safety by measuring wind field and aerosol profile. The Doppler lidar system can provide continuous information about the wind field using the Doppler effect form emitted light signals. Besides, with a depolarization channel, the lidar can distinguish solid non-spherical aerosols from target particles/droplets. In this study, we use two Leosphere Windcube 200s LiDAR systems stationed near Icelandic Meteorological Office(IMO) and at Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, to evaluate turbulence intensity and measure aerosols. The first part of the project, turbulence detection, has been done in the past year. We retrieved radial wind velocity observations from Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) scans to compute eddy dissipation rate (EDR) as an indicator of turbulence intensity. The preliminary results reveal that the lidar observations can detect and quantify atmospheric turbulence with high spatial and temporal resolution. A plan for the coming years about aerosol measurements has been made, including a joint field campaign between Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), Reykjavik University(RU) and IMO. The whole PhD project is expected to be finished in 2019 and the outcome could contribute to enhanced aviation safety in subpolar climate.
