Abstract

Concussion (or mild traumatic brain injury – mTBI) is a common injury among athletes, particularly those engaging in contact sports (e.g. rugby, boxing, American football). mTBI related to sports have garnered increasing scrutiny.

More and more attention is placed on prevention and treatment of TBI. However, definitive solutions remain elusive. Nutritional interventions have been suggested to help prevent and treat TBI. Preclinical evidence suggests that nutritional components with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may have both neuroprotective and therapeutic roles against acute TBIs.

Unfortunately, appropriately designed and implemented studies in humans remain limited. The lack of definitive data in humans is at least partially due to the difficulty with designing ethical studies to appropriately examine nutrition for TBIs. Nevertheless, there is some promising evidence for successful nutritional interventions. We will discuss the available evidence for use of various nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, creatine, curcumin and other compounds, for athletes with head injuries.
