How to Be Effective in an Engineering Career (and in Life!)

Joel Schindall professor emeritus at MIT and Founding director of the GEL program

  • 2.9.2019, 9:00 - 10:00, Háskólinn í Reykjavík

Engineering has blossomed in the last 50 years with incredible advances in technology. This has led to a huge growth in engineering research at many great universities.

However engineering involves applying this knowledge to develop products and processes that are of benefit to society and improve the world — not just to invent, but to make it happen. This part of engineering involves drive, ambition, teamwork, advocacy, decision making in the face of uncertainty, communication, and leadership, and it also requires trust, character, resourcefulness, and a relentless will to succeed. It involves not only what you do, but who you are. It involves engineering and designing the team and the strategy just as much as designing the product.

In 2007 the MIT School of Engineering started an undergraduate program (GEL) to help their students develop these skills. The program is not required, but almost half of MIT's engineering students are now enrolled in at least some portion of the program. In the program students are challenged with team activities that helps them discover the importance of these skills.

In this talk Joel Schindall professor emeritus from MIT and Founding director of the GEL program will talk about how skills in communication, teamwork, leadership and character matter to engineers and if these skills can be taught.
