Title: Finding Point of Interests for Blind and Visually Impaired Pedestrians
Abstract: We propose a method that enables blind and visually impaired people to find a point of interest in a dynamic environment. The method uses only tools commonly available to them: a walking cane extended with a sensor and a mobile phone. The points of interest are equipped with a Bluetooth beacon that identifies the point of interest. Signals received from the beacon are matched with the movements of the sensor on the walking cane and converted to instructions to get the subject closer to the point of interest. The algorithm detects gestures performed with the cane and the phone and measures variations of signal strength to build a map and a direction towards the target.
