Christos Papadimitriou, prófessor í Columbia-háskóla, heldur veffyrirlestur um nýlegar rannsóknir við að útskýra hvernig tungumál þróast í heilanum, út frá sjónarhóli tölvunar. Fyrirlesturinn er í samvinnu Vísindafélag Íslands, Þekkingarseturs um fræðilega tölvunarfræði (HR) og Gran Sasso Science Institute og verður haldinn 14. desember klukkan 16:00. Christos er einn mesti hugsuður tölvunarfræðinnar og sá sem hefur líklega gengið lengst í að fást við stærstu spurningar vísindanna út frá reiknilegum sjónarhóli. Eitt dæmi er hvernig hann kynnti til sögunnar „verð stjórnleysis“ (e. price of anarchy) í leikja- og hagfræði, sem mælir hvernig skilvirkni kerfis dvínar við sjálfhverfa hegðun þátttakenda. Fyrir það vann hann Gödelverðlaunin með Elias Koutsoupias. Nýlega hafa hann og Adi Livnat rannsakað þróun lífvera út frá reiknilegum sjónarhóli, með áherslu á mikilvægi kynæxlunar. Eftir það hefur hann fært sig yfir í rannsóknir á heilanum og efni þessa fyrirlesturs. Christos Papadimitriou er sannur fjölfræðingur. Fyrir utan vísindaleg brautryðjendaverk sín, þá hefur hann einnig ritað tvær skáldsögur "Turing: A novel about computation" og "Independence", og teiknimyndaskáldsögu, "Logicomix", sem náði efst á lista New York Times.

On Monday, 14 December, CS@GSSI, ICE-TCS@Reykjavik University and Vísindafélag Íslands (the Icelandic Academy of Sciences) are thrilled to host a webinar by Christos Papadimitriou (Columbia University, USA). Christos will present some of his recent work on using the lens of computation to explain how language arises in the brain.
Christos is not new to tackling some of the most ambitious questions in science from the computational viewpoint. Amongst other things, in his Gödel Prize winning work with Elias Koutsoupias, he introduced the "price of anarchy" in economics and game theory, a notion that measures how the efficiency of a system degrades due to the selfish behaviour of its agents. More recently, with Adi Livnat,he studied the theory of evolution under the lens of computation, focusing in particular on the role of sexual reproduction in evolution. After that, he moved to the study of the brain and to the topic of his webinar.
Christos Papadimitriou is truly a 21st century Renaissance man. Apart from his path-breaking scientific output, he has written two novels, "Turing: A novel about computation" and "Independence", and a graphic novel, "Logicomix", that was #1 on the NYT Graphic Novel Best Seller list.
