ICE-TCS seminar: Marcel Kyas

: Marcel Kyas (Reykjavik University) will deliver an ICE-TCS seminar. The talk will be held at 2pm in room M1.02 at Reykjavik University.

Abstract: Some services and computations depend on the context they are executed
in. One context is the position of the computing device. Electronic
museum guides may present information for a specific place once the
place is recognized. For this, the device must estimate its
position. Outside of buildings, this can be achieved using
GPS. Indoors, GPS signals are generally not available and we need
different solutions.

Indoor positioning systems measure features of the environment (e.g.,
light, patterns, wireless base stations) and calculate a
position. This process is unreliable, because the features cannot be
measured with the needed precision and accuracy.

I describe the indoor positioning problem, the measurement problem and
positioning methods. I explain why the mathematically correct solution
is inferior because of measurement errors, and describe better
algorithms based on statistical modelling.
