Title: "J. C. R. Licklider: Man-Computer Symbiosis on the Intergalactic Computer Network"
Speaker: Hannes H. Vilhjálmsson (Reykjavik University)
Abstract: Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, or "Lick“, is an example of an interdiscplinary thinker in the early 1960s that saw an opportunity in computers to augment the human ability to think and communicate through a close man-machine partnership. His ideas demanded a form of fluid natural interaction and fast interconnectivity that were barely possible at the time, but taking on a pioneering role at MIT Lincoln Labs, BBN and then DARPA, allowed Lick to funnel resources into many ground-breaking projects that gave us the GUI and the Internet. This talk will review Lick‘s ideas, achievements and ask whether we have become one with the machine yet.
