Stories, Games, and Robots: Making Tools for People

Valkyria Distinguished Lecture Series

  • 24.8.2022, 12:00 - 13:00, Háskólinn í Reykjavík

Dr. Elin Carstensdottir from the University of California Santa Cruz will give a talk at Reykjavik University Wednesday 24th of August, in room M209, at 12:00. This is the second event in the "Valkyria Distinguished Lecture Series" run by the Department of Computer Science.

Building tools for research and design is a significant challenge. In the Interaction Dynamics lab, we build tools within a variety of domains, ranging from video games and storytelling to simulation and robotics. Building software tools help us to understand how they impact and shape not only their users and what they can produce with them, but also how we understand the experiences they afford and the underlying theories they are meant to utilize. In this talk, I will reflect on the current work being undertaken in my lab, focusing on the tools we use, make and study. This work ranges from building an alternate reality game for psychology research, understanding the theoretical underpinnings of video games and the story experiences to improve design, to building dedicated research tools for roboticists.

Dr. Elin Carstensdottir is an Assistant Professor in the Computational Media department in the Baskin School of Engineering at the University of California Santa Cruz, where she directs the Interaction Dynamics Lab. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on developing tools, methods, and models to assist researchers and designers of video games, serious games, and interactive narratives in their work, as well as researchers in other fields such as human-computer interaction, simulation and robotics. She obtained her BSc in Computer Science from Reykjavik University in 2013, and her PhD in Computer Science from Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University in 2019.
