Abstract
Protection is the science of designing and operating equipment called ‘relays', to supervise the power system and provide maximum sensitivity to any faults or any undesirable conditions and avoid their operation during normal conditions. Different types of relays should be used to protect different elements of the power systems, concerning different types of faults. The main objective of the protection system is to detect any abnormal conditions in the power system, including faults and interruptions, and initiates suitable corrective actions to minimize the damage and return the power system to its normal state, by isolating the faulty section as quickly as possible. In this presentation, the main components of the protection system will be presented and different types of relays will be summarized.
