ICE-TCS Lectures Series - Sigurdur I. Erlingsson - Lattice models for multi-terminal nanostructures in magnetic field

On Friday, 8 October 2010 Sigurdur I. Erlingsson (School of Science and Engineering, Reykjavik University) will deliver an ICE-TCS seminar. The talk, which is entitled Lattice models for multi-terminal nanostructures in magnetic field, will be held at 2pm in room M1.05 at Reykjavik University (Menntavegur 1).







ABSTRACT


The first part of this talk will be a review of some of the basic properties of lattice models and how they relate to calculations of charge and spin transport in nanostructures. I will show how self-energies can be defined to handle the infinite dimensional matrices that naturally arise in such calculations. Applied magnetic fields can also be incorporated into this formalism and I will show how system with non-trivial shapes can by calculated. The second part of the talk will focus on algorithms to speed up numerical calculations, which in our case mostly involve matrix inversion. I will discuss a new algorithm that we are currently working on to speed up calculations in multi-terminal systems. Finally, if time permits, I will discuss (possible) future work on how to efficiently calculate even bigger and more complex systems.
