Overview

The MSc Sustainable Energy Engineering is designed for students with an engineering background who want to deepen their technical expertise in sustainable energy systems.

You will study energy technologies, engineering analysis, data, economics, project development and system design while shaping the degree around your interests through specialization courses, electives and thesis research.

The programme is suited to graduates from fields such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, environmental and related engineering disciplines who want to work on the design, analysis and development of sustainable energy systems.

Not coming from an engineering background?
The MSc Sustainable Energy Science may be the better fit. The two programmes share some courses, but Sustainable Energy Engineering is designed specifically for students continuing from an engineering foundation

Learning at ISE

Studying energy at ISE means connecting academic learning with the energy systems, organisations and people working around you.

Structure

The MSc Sustainable Energy Engineering is a two-year, 120 ECTS degree. Students normally complete approximately 30 ECTS each semester through a combination of required courses, specialization courses, electives and thesis research.

With academic guidance, you will build a study plan that combines:

  • Core Courses – required study at the department and programme level.
  • Specialization Courses – approved courses that allow you to build greater depth in an area of interest.
  • Recommended Electives – additional courses that broaden or complement your studies.
  • MSc Thesis – choose between a 30 ECTS or approved 60 ECTS thesis option.

Both thesis options form part of the same 120 ECTS MSc degree.

The recommended study pathways described above can help guide your selection of specialization courses, but they are not formal specializations awarded with the degree.

Professional Certification

In Iceland, completing a 180 ECTS BSc in engineering followed by a 120 ECTS MSc may qualify graduates for the protected professional title verkfræðingur, subject to Icelandic regulatory requirements. International students should check professional-recognition requirements in the country where they intend to work.

Where You'll Learn

ISE students study at Reykjavík University, with access to engineering laboratories, workshops and research facilities that support coursework, projects and MSc thesis work.

Admissions

The programme is designed primarily for applicants with a bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering or a closely related engineering field.

Typical backgrounds include mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, industrial, energy and related engineering disciplines.

Applicants from other academic backgrounds may also be considered if their previous studies provide the required mathematics, science and engineering foundation.
