Sixty startups with roots at Reykjavík University

Over sixty innovative companies have been founded at RU and have been placed under the startup sun. Most of them arise from student final projects and/or staff research. This aligns precisely with the university's strategy to be a leader in research, while also being a powerful hub of innovation.

says in the RU strategy

A mapping of start-up companies with ties to RU was carried out in 2022. The project was intended to cover companies founded by students or staff during their studies or employment at RU since the university's founding in 1998. The project highlighted over sixty innovative companies with direct ties to RU. Most of these companies arise from student final projects and/or staff research, and this is in line with the RU's strategy to be a leader in research while being a strong innovation university.

New technologies, products and companies

Reykjavík University strives to provide students with a solid understanding of innovation, encouraging them to become entrepreneurs and create jobs in the future, such as by establishing start-ups. The largest annual course taught at RU is “Entrepreneurship and Starting New Venture”, and students from most departments at the school participate in it over three weeks at the end of their first or second year of study. The course has given rise to numerous ideas that have subsequently led to the creation of new companies, products, and technologies. RU students are also constantly encouraged to work on projects in collaboration with companies, as close collaboration with the business community and interdisciplinary collaboration are among the emphasis points in the RU’s strategy.
