Access to inventions and technologies
Technology transfer
Licencing and purchase of IPR
Technology transfer from research to industry is a strategic focus point for RU. The University offers companies secure access to use inventions and technologies developed at RU.
Companies can thereby gain valuable new knowledge for a competitive advantage. This is most commonly done through either licensing or the purchase of intellectual property rights (IPR) such as patents.
Spin-offs
RU also supports the establishment of so-called spin-off companies based on new technology and inventions within the university. Spin-off is yet another way to transfer knowledge created through university research. Economic value is created when ideas and inventions are further developed, such as through new high-tech jobs. It also creates cooperation and investment opportunities for companies. RU currently holds a share in a number of spin-off companies.
Innovation through research
Reykjavik University is first among equals in terms of research success. RU Research Units cover knowledge in a spectrum of disciplines within science and engineering, and there are already several positive examples of technology transfers from RU to society and industry, including spin-offs.
Networks
Reykjavik University is a member of two of the largest technology transfer networks in the world: ASTP-PROTON (Knowledge Transfer Europe) and the US-based AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers). Membership in these networks allows RU to learn best practices from world-class institutions.
