Quality Management
Monitoring the Quality of Education, Teaching, and Research
Chapter IV of the University Act No. 63/2006 outlines how the quality of teaching and research should be monitored, with further details provided in Regulation No. 1165/2024. The Minister has entrusted the Icelandic Agency for Quality Assurance (IAQA) with overseeing this monitoring.
IAQA has developed a framework to enhance the quality of Icelandic universities (QEF). According to the framework, regular and systematic evaluations of the quality of university activities in Iceland should be conducted. This evaluation includes internal assessments by the universities of their academic activities and external assessments conducted by the IAQA.
The first phase of the framework program covered the years 2010-2016, QEF1; the second phase, 2017-2023, QEF2; and the third phase, 2024-2029, QEF3. Universities are required to publish evaluation reports or extracts from them publicly.
