Internship Program at Reykjavik University

Reykjavik University (RU) is committed to equipping students with the skills and experience needed for the workforce. Our internship programme connects students with companies, organisations, and institutions, providing them with real-world insights, industry-specific skills, and opportunities to apply their academic knowledge in practical settings.

Why Internships Matter

RU’s internship programme strengthens students’ ties to the job market, deepens their understanding of their field, and equips them with valuable experience by engaging in real-world projects.

Benefits for Students

  • Gain practical experience and apply academic knowledge to real challenges.
  • Improve problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Increase employability and become a more competitive job candidate after graduation.
  • Build a professional network that can open future career opportunities.
  • Work with a dedicated mentor who provides guidance and feedback.

Internship Structure & Timing

Internships are available across all RU departments, though their structure and timing vary. Each internship should:

  • Be relevant to the student's field of study.
  • Provide a challenging yet manageable learning experience.
  • Include a clear job description outlining responsibilities, skills required, and expected outcomes.

Each department follows its own internship timeline and selection process.

Internship Selection Process

The selection process differs by department:

  • Student-initiated internships: Students reach out to companies independently (Engineering, Sports Science – Master’s).
  • University-assigned internships: Faculty assigns students to companies (Psychology, Sports Science – Bachelor’s).
  • Application-based selection: Students apply and rank their top choices, and faculty matches them based on performance and skills (Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Law).
  • Company-driven selection: Companies advertise internship positions through RU, and students apply directly.

Internship Supervisor Role

Each intern is assigned a supervisor within the company to ensure a meaningful learning experience. The supervisor’s responsibilities include:

  • Defining internship goals and expectations.
  • Providing company orientation, including culture, safety, and procedures.
  • Offering training and access to necessary resources.
  • Giving constructive feedback and guidance.
  • Encouraging professional development and networking.

Internship Agreements & Compensation

RU facilitates agreements between students and companies. Some companies may require additional contracts covering confidentiality and intellectual property.

Internships are generally unpaid, though exceptions may exist in certain departments.

Internships at RU provide an invaluable opportunity to gain experience, develop essential skills, and build professional connections—key steps towards a successful career!
