Dept. of Engineering - visiting Reseacher Dr. Alena Lohrmann

Water impacts as the missing piece in energy system analyses

On Tuesday, November 4th, at 14:30, all are welcome to come learn about Dr. Lohrmann's research.

The Dept. of Engineering welcome all to come listen to visiting researcher, Dr. Alena Lohrmann. She is a postdoctoral researcher for the Chair of Energy Systems Analysis at ETH Zürich, Switzerland. She received her doctoral degree from LUT University in Lappeenranta, Finland. She also holds bachelor's and master’s degrees in engineering and technology in the fields of thermal power engineering and heat engineering. Her research interests include energy system analysis, water footprint assessment, and machine learning.

Freshwater resources are becoming increasingly unavailable, and the competition for water resources among different sectors of the economy is worsening in many parts of the world. In the energy sector, the technologies currently used for electricity generation rely heavily on water availability. However, current energy system models mainly focus on techno-economic performance and operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, often overlooking potential environmental trade-offs and water impacts. This presentation is aimed to shed light on the current use of water in the global power sector and on a sustainable energy transition from the perspective of energy-related water demand.
