Interdisciplinary Approach in Focus: A New Perspective on Risk Assessment in Domestic Violence
On Friday, June 5, a symposium and workshop were held by the Faculty of Law at Reykjavik University on the sharing of personal data in connection with risk assessments in violence cases. The event was organized by Dr. María Rún Bjarnadóttir in collaboration with Bjarkarhlíð.

Belgian experts Pascale Franck and Dries Wyckmans delivered presentations on the structure of risk assessments in domestic violence cases in Belgium, which is based on an interdisciplinary approach and a coordinated understanding of risk factors associated with violence. They specialize in services for both victims and perpetrators of violence.

Both hold leading roles within a European network of service centers for victims of violence. During their visit to Iceland, they visited all four service centers for victims in the country: Bjarkarhlíð, Sigurhæðir, Suðurhlíð, and Bjarmahlíð.

In their presentations, they emphasized the importance of conducting risk assessments based on information from multiple stakeholders, with particular attention given to defined risk factors as well as potential protective factors. They highlighted that a comprehensive evaluation of available information should be used systematically to prevent violence and to implement appropriate measures to stop patterns and behaviours of abuse.

They also introduced a new coordinated digital system, WIDA, which Belgian service centers for victims of violence have recently implemented to facilitate information sharing between relevant parties in domestic violence cases.
Sædís Jana Jónsdóttir, project manager of risk analysis at the Capital Area Police, also gave a presentation. She discussed the framework and analytical factors used in conducting domestic violence risk assessments within the police, as well as the challenges faced in applying risk assessment tools in Iceland.
The event concluded with a tabletop exercise, where participants worked through realistic case examples in conducting risk assessments.

The event was organized in cooperation between the Faculty of Law at Reykjavik University and Bjarkarhlíð, as a continuation of a symposium held by the Faculty on April 20, which focused on the sharing of personal data in the context of domestic violence, with particular emphasis on legal provisions regarding professional confidentiality. The event was streamed online and was well attended.
