RU graduate and entrepreneur receives environmental recognition
The Humble app, which focuses on reducing food waste, recently received Kuðungurinn, an environmental recognition award from the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Climate.
Hlynur Rafn Guðmundsson is one of the developers behind the app. He graduated with a master’s degree in Innovation Management from the Business and Economics Department at Reykjavík University in 2022.
He wholeheartedly recommends studying at Reykjavík University, describing the education as practical and supportive of his professional and personal development.
What stood out most during my studies was that I could immediately apply what I learned to launching my own company. Today, Humble has nearly 40,000 users and 125 partner outlets across the country. The company’s goal is to continue adding more locations and to further develop its products and services, guided by the aim of reducing food waste and offering people food at more affordable prices.
He says, adding that throughout this journey, the founders learned an enormous amount about general business operations, financing, networking, and other important aspects of building a startup company in Iceland.
It has also pleasantly surprised us how supportive the environment for innovation is here in Iceland. There is a strong support ecosystem, and people are generally open to new ideas and willing to help.
According to Hlynur Rafn, the future for Humble involves continued growth, expanding partnerships, and further development of solutions that help businesses and consumers reduce food waste in a simple, accessible way.
