The aim to teach Icelandic in a practical way

In Icelandic courses for international students and staff at Reykjavík University, the aim is to teach the language in a practical way, with the goal of helping students start using Icelandic as quickly as possible in everyday communication, such as at work, in shops, and in social settings.

The course provides an excellent opportunity for participants to meet others who are in similar situations.

The course emphasises spoken language and comprehension. Teaching is based on conversations and listening exercises that reflect real-life situations. Students work with vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic grammar, and are given opportunities to practice asking questions, forming short sentences, and responding in Icelandic. The teaching approach is flexible, with an emphasis on individual support and encouraging feedback so that students can build confidence in using the language.

The course is designed for beginners, though students with some basic knowledge of Icelandic are also welcome to attend. The course offers a good opportunity for them to further develop their language skills. The classes are held twice a week, and students from the Iceland University of the Arts also attend.

The course is taught by Jóhann Björnsson, a teacher at Reykjavík University's Preliminary Studies.
