RU Teaching Strategy 

The Teaching Strategy of Reykjavík University outlines the institution's goals and methods to provide students with an outstanding education that meets future needs. It emphasizes comprehensive knowledge in academic fields, deep understanding of concepts and theories, practical application of skills, and fostering critical thinking, creativity, and ethical work practices. Sustainability is a key principle in decision-making related to teaching, research, and operations. 

General  

  • International and national academic standards are upheld in all accredited fields of study. 
  • Emphasis shall be placed on small-group teaching, active student participation, practical projects, and hands-on learning. 
  • Education is offered for all stages of life. 
  • Programs and courses are regularly reviewed to maintain academic strength, align with the needs of the industry, and ensure students are well-prepared for work or further study. 
  • Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their education and participate in course development through representation on departmental and academic councils. 

Teaching and Learning Environment 

  • Teachers and students use advanced learning systems, tools, and technologies to enhance engagement, improve communication, and ensure effective feedback. 
  • Teachers receive ongoing professional development opportunities in their fields. 
  • Teachers can consult teaching development for guidance on course design, diverse teaching methods, assessment, and use of educational tools. 

Quality of Teaching and Learning  

  • HR offers challenging programs to build a solid academic foundation and practical skills. 
  • Teaching is based on the expertise of faculty both external and in-house and well-organized preparation, emphasizing the ability to communicate knowledge effectively.

  • The number of students per academic staff member should be in line with the standards of leading universities.

Evaluation of the Quality of Teaching and Learning  

  • Teaching quality is regularly assessed through various metrics, including teaching methods and assessments. Results are used to maintain and enhance quality. 
  • Faculty progression evaluations consider teaching performance, professional development, and innovation. 
  • Programs are periodically reviewed within departments and evaluated by international experts.

Implementation of the Strategy 

The Curriculum Council, Teaching Development, and departmental councils oversee the implementation of HR’s teaching strategy. Each year, Teaching Development collaborates with the Curriculum Council to compile a report summarizing key projects and progress related to the teaching strategy. 

Reviewed by the academic council in the fall of 2024 and the updated version approved by the Executive committee on the 10th of December 2024
