What will I learn?

All courses are taught in Icelandic. Proficiency in Icelandic is a requirement.

The programme is practically oriented and rooted in the electrical and electronics industry. Emphasis is placed on practical project work and the application of computer design tools. Most of the teachers have extensive industrial experience. In the final semester, students complete a final project of 10 ECTS dealing with technical solutions in development, design, and planning, wherein they demonstrate the knowledge and professional competence they have gained.

In the programme, there is an emphasis on the subjects of electrical power distribution, electrical machinery, electrical and electronic control technology, computer-aided design, management, and administration of enterprises, as well as regulation covering the safe operation of electrical equipment. Emphasis is put on practical projects and the application of computer software to solve common design problems.

The programme's main objective is to qualify students for jobs as intermediate professionals, filling the gap between certified tradesmen and higher-level technical staff.

Teaching methods

The diploma programme is 90 ECTS credits and is operated solely as distance learning. Twice during each term, students attend working sessions over a weekend where they perform lab exercises and projects.

Distance learning

The students get lectures, projects, and other study materials electronically on the university's teaching web, and their communications with teachers and other students are mostly done through this web.  In addition to traditional teaching material, electronic slides, video recordings, and remote conference facilities are used.  Students outside the Reykjavik area get access to local education centres, but students in the Reykjavik area are offered study facilities for group work on the university premises.

Practical projects

During the Electrical Technology programme, the students add considerably to their knowledge and competence. In the last semester, they completed a final project wherein they demonstrated practical knowledge and professional competence when dealing with technical solutions relating to design, planning, and development.

The CDIO Network

The Department of Applied Engineering is a member of the International Cooperation Network for the Development of Technical Education CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate). This network has some 100 progressive universities as members and mainly emphasises the quality of engineering and technology studies.

Career

Certification

To be certified as a Technician, students must have a Journeyman's Certificate in the field, which will grant them a Master Craftsmanship Diploma.

Business Administration

Students graduating with a Diploma in Technology can carry on their studies to complete a 30 ECTS Diploma in Technology - Business Administration. The supplementary diploma is for students who have completed the 90 ECTS Technology Diploma and focuses on operations and production management.

The projects are practical and hands-on and have been a good learning experience for me, for example, it has been fun to get to know 3D design.
