What do I learn

This programme combines computer science and business administration knowledge to teach students business management, operations, and technical skills. There is a growing demand for employees with such a combined degree.

A programme in computer science is suitable for those interested in designing software and websites, developing computer games, dealing with mathematics, learning programming and much more. Computer science, like business administration, is a diverse and vibrant discipline that overlaps with other fields of study, such as mathematics, psychology, engineering and bioinformatics. The possibilities offered by this programme are, therefore, countless. Studying for a BSc degree in computer science with business administration as a minor is a 180 ECTS programme and takes three years.

Teaching methods

The programme is structured around practical projects and lectures. Recordings of some lectures are accessible to students online. The teaching is based on a 12+3 arrangement, where courses are taught for 12 weeks with an assessment at the end, followed by three weeks of practical courses. Students attend both lectures and practical case sessions.

Students participate in group work, pioneering work, and working jointly across departments. This provides excellent preparation for working out in the field and makes them capable of creating their start-up.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Undergraduate students complete a three-week course called Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The course revolves around developing a business idea and writing a business plan. This introduces students to innovation and entrepreneurship, business plan writing, and interdisciplinary collaboration right from the start of their studies. They regularly present their project with elevator pitches, where they have one minute to sell the idea to potential investors.

Internship

Students can apply for an internship at the prestigious Fraunhofer Research Institute in Maryland, USA. The internship is valued for credits. Fraunhofer conducts intensive research in close collaboration with various institutions, and students are invited to participate in this work. Students are paid during the internship, which usually lasts six months.

Final projects linked to the industry

Final projects for BSc students are completed in groups under the supervision of a teacher and are usually carried out in collaboration with some of Iceland’s largest companies and institutions.

Career

Upon completing their undergraduate studies, students gain the right to use the legally protected professional title of computer scientist. Graduates work in system analysis and design, web and interface design, programming, quality testing, and more.

The department also offers graduate programmes, giving students an even more significant advantage when seeking jobs, especially regarding management positions.

Structure

To complete a BSc degree in Computer Science with Business as a minor, 180 ECTS credits must be completed. Each course is 6 ECTS credits, except for the final project, which is 12 ECTS credits. An example of how on-campus studies are organized can be seen in the accompanying table, but courses may be arranged differently as long as prerequisite rules are followed.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites can be found in the course catalogue. Students who have not completed the prerequisite courses may expect to be deregistered from the course without further notice, as it is the students’ responsibility to ensure that prerequisites are fulfilled.

New knowledge

RU is at the forefront of artificial intelligence research worldwide. Students who collaborate on projects and perform research with researchers from the Artificial Intelligence Centre, HR, CADIA, have access to the centre's facilities for experiments and unique development in the Black Hole, a multimedia experimental area. Some devices can be used to communicate between people and computers, including virtual reality devices (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive), giant screens (3m x 2m), computer vision (Kinect), directional microphones, computer-controlled LED lighting, speaker systems, and sound mixers, to name a few. The room can be reserved for project work or experiments.
