The International Ferro-Alloys Congress (INFACON) in Reykjavik, Iceland, May 23 – 27, 2027
About INFACON

The conference is hosted by Reykjavik University in collaboration with the University of Iceland, IceTec, and Aluminium Cluster Iceland, and is organised in cooperation with the International Committee on Ferro-Alloys (ICFA) and will take place May 23 – 27, 2027.

The International Ferro-Alloys Congress (INFACON) is an established forum for researchers and industry professionals working in silicon and ferroalloy production. Since the inaugural congress in Johannesburg in 1974, it has fostered technical interchange across the globe.

The aim of INFACON is to simulate research, development, and practical exchange on all aspects of ferroalloy production. Recent congresses have emphasised decarbonising the sector and pursuing CO-free ferroalloy process.

INFACON XVIII will bring together metallurgists, plant operators, and equipment suppliers to share experiences and discuss new developments in the field. The programme will include plenary lectures, keynote addresses, technical sessions, and poster presentations. Delegates will also have opportunities for networking, an industrial exhibition, and tours of Icelandic smelters.

The last conference was held in China in 2024.

INFACON is controlled by the ICFA, whose objective is to promote the holding of the congress every two to three years in appropriate locations and to retain the established high technical standard.

Important Dates

Topics

INFACON XVIII welcomes contributions covering the entire spectrum of ferroalloy science and technology. The list below reflects themes addressed in recent congresses and emerging areas of interest. Authors should select the most relevant topic for their submission.

  • Low‑carbon technologies & CO₂ emissions – new reductants, renewable energy integration and process electrification.
  • Mn alloys – raw materials, pretreatment, furnace operation, tapping, slag handling, process modelling and energy efficiency.
  • FeCr & FeNi alloys – production, raw materials, pretreatment, refining and casting.
  • Si & FeSi – silicon and ferrosilicon production, furnace operation, electrical systems, and slag management.
  • Other alloys & novel products – new alloy systems, recycling and circularity.
  • Reductants & carbon materials – biocarbon, natural gas, and alternative reducing agents.
  • Control systems & digitalisation – automation, modelling, big data and artificial intelligence.
  • Furnaces, electrodes & refractories – design, materials and operation.
  • Health, safety & environment – occupational health, safety and environmental management.
  • Markets & policy – supply chain analysis, market dynamics, trade and policy frameworks.

Abstracts and papers must be written in English and adhere to the provided templates. All submissions will undergo peer review; accepted papers will be published in the congress proceedings and must be presented by one of the authors.
