Andres Laverde

Andrés Laverde came to ISE from Colombia with a background in geosciences and a growing interest in volcanology, geothermal resources and sustainability. While studying Geosciences at Los Andes University in Bogotá, Andrés became interested in how Earth systems could be understood and applied to energy challenges. That interest eventually brought him to Iceland, where he joined the MSc Sustainable Energy Science programme at the Iceland School of Energy.

“Iceland is a dream for any geologist passionate about volcanoes and geothermal energy. ISE allowed me to deepen my expertise in geothermal energy while broadening my perspective on sustainability and policy-making.”

At ISE, Andrés built on his geoscience background through geothermal energy studies, applied projects and an international learning environment. He particularly valued working alongside students from different academic and cultural backgrounds. His MSc thesis focused on geothermal conceptual and numerical modelling, giving him the opportunity to apply methods from his studies to subsurface energy systems.

From ISE into the geothermal sector

After graduating in 2020, Andrés continued into the geothermal energy sector, including several years working as a geothermal energy engineer with Arctic Green Energy. His work included geothermal resource assessment, conceptual modelling and GIS, as well as supporting projects in different international settings.

Andrés has also remained connected to the ISE community after graduation, including contributing to geothermal teaching and student learning. His path from geosciences in Colombia to postgraduate study in Iceland and professional work in geothermal energy shows how a scientific background can develop into a specialised career in the energy sector.
