Vala Hjörleifsdóttir
Geophysics, Geothermal Energy and Natural Hazards
Vala Hjörleifsdóttir works at the intersection of geophysics, geothermal energy and natural-hazard monitoring. Her research focuses on understanding seismic activity, volcanic systems and the subsurface processes that influence both geothermal development and hazard assessment.

With a PhD in Geophysics from Caltech, Vala has worked across academia and the energy sector. Before joining Reykjavík University, she held research and leadership roles including work at Reykjavík Energy and UNAM in Mexico City, giving her experience in both applied energy innovation and academic research.
Connecting Research with Real Energy Challenges
Vala’s work includes seismic monitoring on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, using tools such as seismometers and optical-fibre sensing to better understand subsurface activity. These methods can support both natural-hazard monitoring and the mapping of geothermal systems, connecting fundamental geophysical research with practical applications in renewable energy.
At ISE and Reykjavík University, this combination of academic and industry experience gives students exposure to how advanced geophysics can be applied to real questions in geothermal exploration, volcanic monitoring and sustainable-energy development.
