A programme offering an accessible educational materials on AI

Artificial intelligence specialist Saga Úlfarsdóttir teaches an introductory AI course at the Open University titled AI Literacy – Intro to AI. Saga holds a master’s degree in artificial intelligence from the Technical University of Denmark and specialises in machine learning. She currently works as an independent consultant. The programme is available both in English and Icelandic.

The course was established with the support of the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) to increase the availability of accessible educational materials on artificial intelligence for managers and other professionals in the business sector. Participants gain fundamental knowledge and insight into what AI is and how it functions. The course is the first in a planned series that will cover various aspects of artificial intelligence.

Asked about the public debate surrounding AI, Saga notes that attitudes vary significantly depending on the group in question; some welcome the technology, while others view it with apprehension.

Almost everyone at any age is now using AI-powered chat solutions, while certain groups want nothing to do with them. Everything is evolving very quickly, and the future direction is still uncertain, so it’s natural that some fear surrounds the topic. Most companies are excited about the opportunities the technology offers, but few have done substantial work around it or developed a policy for its use.

She says.

The course is suitable for anyone involved in decisions about the adoption or use of artificial intelligence, including managers, public sector employees, healthcare professionals, finance specialists, teachers, and individuals interested in understanding how AI may impact their field. It is particularly valuable for individuals who want to use AI responsibly without needing to become technical experts.

I have always been interested in understanding the world through data, because it can reveal things we do not consciously perceive. Data is the foundation of artificial intelligence, and AI can act like a kind of mirror—one that often shows us something unexpected.

Saga says of how her interest in the field first began.

Saga and Vigdís Helga Eyjólfsdóttir, a student of computer science who hosts the podcast, Frostkastið ,recently discussed AI and cbyersecurity at Samfélagið radio programme at RÚV.
