Construction of the Rapid Bus Transit (BRT) System to Begin at Reykjavík University

Transport for the Capital Area (TfCA), in collaboration with the City of Reykjavík and Veitur Utilities, will begin construction works in August to develop infrastructure for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along Nauthólsvegur and at Reykjavík University (RU). A dedicated public transport corridor will be created in the centre of the road, separated from general traffic lanes by traffic islands. New cycle and pedestrian paths will also be constructed on both sides of the road.

The existing roundabout at the junction of Nauthólsvegur and Menntavegur will be replaced with signal-controlled crossroads. A new BRT station will be built to the west of Reykjavik University. In addition, a new access route to the University's main entrance will be created, along with a new access road to the Icelandic Coast Guard headquarters.

The works are scheduled for completion in July 2028.

Access Maintained Throughout Construction

Access for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users will be maintained throughout the construction period by means of temporary diversions. One traffic lane in each direction will remain open, as at present. Connections to the paths in Öskjuhlíð will be maintained, and bus stops will remain operational throughout the project, although their locations may change as work progresses. Disruption to parking facilities will be kept to a minimum.

According to the project developers, every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to stakeholders, including Reykjavík University and local residents. However, some disruption is unavoidable when located in close proximity to a construction site.

Impact on Access and Parking

• Access to the University will remain fully available, and there will be no impact on parking at Reykjavík University during Phase 1 of the project.
• One traffic lane in each direction will remain open throughout the construction period (1+1 configuration, as at present).
• Connections to the walking and cycling paths in Öskjuhlíð will be maintained.
• Bus stops will remain open throughout the project, although they may be relocated as work progresses.
