Drones examined from multiple perspectives at RU conference

Last week, Kveikja.ai partnered with the Department of Law at Reykjavik University to host a conference on drones and security. RU’s Department of Computer Science and Department of Engineering also contributed to the conference, which took place at RU and at Nauthóll.

The conference brought together representatives from law enforcement, defence, industry, academia, and user groups to discuss the current state and future of drone technology within both Icelandic and international contexts.

Dr. María Rún Bjarnadóttir, a specialist at RU’s Department of Law, says the aim of the conference was to bring together diverse stakeholders and examine drones from a wide range of academic and practical perspectives.

Raising security and ethical related questions

“The idea behind this conference was born out of the AI and Society conference hosted here at Reykjavík University earlier this year. The focus of that conference was the different angles AI is affecting our societies, as well as on an interpersonal and personal level.

This multi angular perspective is what drove the shaping of the program today. We are looking to explore drones as a tool and technology, instrument and innovation – but also understand the usecases in the context of safety and security. This of course raises security and ethical related questions that we will also seek to address here today,” María Rún said, among other things, in her opening remarks.

María Rún says the conference was a success and attendance was very good, with more than 100 guests registered. A range of speakers from different fields delivered presentations, and Sunna Gunnars Marteinsdóttir chaired the event.
