The Institute of Biomedical and Neural Engineering (IBNE) at Reykjavik University won The Best Paper Award at the International Conference on eXtended Reality (XR Salento 2026) in Otranto in Italy this June.
The authors of the paper are Damiano Coato, Gianmarco Dolino, Riccardo Forni, Arnar Evgení Gunnarsson, Halldór Jónsson Jr. and Paolo Gargiulo, with Coato presenting its findings at the conference.
Paolo, director of IBNE and professor at RU’s department of engineering, noted on his LinkedIn profile that the paper introduces innovative approaches to digital anatomy and medical education, showcasing the potential of interactive 3D anatomical libraries in healthcare training and research.

“This achievement highlights strong interdisciplinary collaboration and our commitment to advancing digital health, medical education, and immersive technologies. Well done to the team for this accomplishment and for representing IBNE and Reykjavik University internationally,” Paolo writes.
