New Times Higher Education ranking

In the new Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Reykjavik University is ranked 801–1000 among the nearly 2,300 universities included in the ranking, remaining in the same range as last year.

The ranking is one of the most respected university rankings published and is widely considered when assessing international higher education. It is based, among other things, on evaluations of teaching, research, international engagement, and collaboration with industry.

Ragnhildur Helgadóttir, President of RU, says it is particularly pleasing that the university is strengthening its position in both teaching and the research environment.

“The teaching methods and degree programmes at Reykjavik University are continually evolving in response to rapid technological changes. There is also considerable momentum in research at the university, with more than 95% of our researchers’ academic articles published internationally. This year, we have already received a record number of applications to the European Union’s research and development funding programmes, including applications for Horizon and ERC grants. We are also seeing a significant increase in the number of researchers at Reykjavik University establishing collaborations through EEA grant applications.

Our academic staff also play an important role in Icelandic society by sharing their knowledge, participating in public discourse, and providing government and industry with expert advice in their respective fields,” says Ragnhildur.

Ragnhildur adds that although rankings such as these are controversial, they provide some indication of developments in various aspects of university activities. The fact that RU is in the upper half of this ranking is therefore a welcome recognition of the strong work carried out by the university’s staff and students every day. It also confirms that the university’s focused efforts to strengthen teaching, research, and its role in society are producing results.
