Packed Laugardalshöll at Vísindavaka science fair

Vísindavaka science fair was held at Laugardalshöll last Saturday. Representatives from Reykjavik University showcased some of the many projects and research they work on daily in their studies and jobs.

Visitors had the opportunity to try out various tools and devices, and children were invited to solve different challenges.

Rakel Gunnarsdóttir, event project manager at the communications department, says the day went extremely well:

I always find it so wonderful to see how excited the kids are. Our venue at Reykjavík University was nearly full the entire time, and there was a lot of interest in what we were presenting. I spoke with quite a few kids, and more than one or two said they wanted to become scientists in the future. There's a truly unique atmosphere at the Science Fair, and it's great to see how unafraid the kids are to participate, ask questions, and learn.

At SKEMA, visitors could design Reykjavik University in Minecraft, combine music and programming, learn the basics of game development, and control robots. Students from RU Racing presented their project related to Formula racing, while Systur provided programming lessons. At RU Robotics, it was demonstrated how science is applied in robot design, and Frostbyte showed visitors how easy it is to hack into a home and how to respond to such threats.

Representatives from the Department of Sports Science also let visitors try measurement equipment that recorded how high people could jump and how hard they could catch.
