Sheding light on effective and motivating methods for teaching school sports
A new initiative at the Department of Sport Science at Reykjavik University aims to shed light on effective and motivating methods for teaching school sports. This year, applications are requested that describe the excellent use of assessment and physical education teachers will be honoured who have used assessment in an effective and motivating way for students in school sports and thus created a positive learning environment in the subject. Emphasis is placed on methods where creative solutions are in the foreground and take into account the diversity of students, ages and needs.

Sveinn Þorgeirsson, coordinator of the MED programme, says that the idea behind the initiative is to create positivity around the field and activate role models within it.
The idea with the initiative is to create a platform where we can create positivity around our profession and bring attention to the role models who are doing really well in the field. This is a unique opportunity to lift the profession up, praise it and show school sports teachers that there is interest in their work.
Many graduates from the Department of Sport Science at RU have a career in teaching school sports. Sveinn points out that this is an ideal point of contact with the general public, which has the right to good physical education. Further, the profession is developing rapidly and ideas about the profession and its role have changed a lot in just about a decade. Sveinn envisions that it will be an annual event to honour teachers in the profession, preferably at all school levels in the future.
Teachers can apply by filling out this form and sending it to kennsluvidurkenning@ru.is. It is also possible to nominate other teachers or colleagues by sending an email to the same email address with a brief explanation of the nomination along with contact information.
