Students compete and succeed in Rotman International Trading Competition

The RITC is an annual competition that brings teams of students to compete with peers from 40+ universities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Teams will experience a unique 2-day simulated market challenge, participating in various activities, including electronic trading cases and social events.

The RU team and Sævarður Einarsson, a lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

On the team for RU, this year were four students from the Department of Business and Economics and the Department of Engineering. In the team were Helgi Hrannar Briem, Andri Sæberg Diego, Hjörtur Kristjánsson and Einar Andri Briem, who were chosen to compete upon completing a practical elective course within the Department of Business and Economics, dedicated to RITC.

Joining them were, Sævarður Einarsson, who teaches at the Department of Business and Economics. He praises the team for their input:

The course is intended as preparation for the competition as well as introducing students to financial markets and their functions. It consists of lectures and training in using the RIT programme from Rotman where we go through a specific case, emphasisising is on a specific project related to the financial markets. The competition and preparation went very well for the team and it was obvious that they had the ambition to put work into preparation, which then resulted in good results in the competition itself. The team was absolutely exemplary for RU.

Representatives from 35 universities from 13 countries participated, including many of the world's most prestigious business schools. The group says that the competition was challenging while at the same time instructive.

In RITC, the competitors' skills in pricing financial instruments, risk management and analysis are tested, as well as observing on communication and teamwork. Preparing for the competition required a lot of work in preparing plans, analytical models and applications. It was useful for us to have experienced using the RIT programme and worked on assignments, some of which are similar to the ones perfomed in the competition. Sævarður also has extensive experience in the financial sector and has participated in RITC in recent years, which came in handy in the preparation for the competition.

They all share an interest in the financial markets and can envision working in that field. They agree that by competing, they have gained valuable experience for the future that will benefit them in one way or another in finance-related jobs.
