Students compete in Rotman International Trading Competition
RITC is an annual competition that brings teams of students to compete with peers from over 30 universities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Teams will experience a unique two-day simulated market challenge, participating in activities such as electronic trading cases and social events.
On the RU team this year, there were four students from the Department of Business and Economics and the Department of Engineering. In the team were Auðunn Fannar Hafþórsson, Birgir Bragi Gunnþórsson, Bríet Ófeigsdóttir and Nína Ann M Guðmundsdóttir, who were chosen to compete upon completing a practical elective course within the Department of Business and Economics, dedicated to RITC.
The course prepares students for the competition and introduces them to financial markets and their functions. It consists of lectures and training on using the RIT programme from Rotman, in which students work through a specific case focusing on a project related to the financial markets.
Joining the team was Sævarður Einarsson, who teaches at the Department of Business and Economics. He says there has been strong interest in the course, with the students holding the highest grades given priority when spots become available.
Participation in the competition provides students with valuable experience and knowledge of financial markets. The projects are realistic and challenging, offering students meaningful insight into what matters when making investment decisions. Preparation for the competition involves training students to work in teams under demanding conditions, and the benefit is a greater likelihood of strong performance in the competition itself. During the competition, students also have the opportunity to visit a major international university and meet students from institutions around the world.
Says Sævarður, but representatives from 37 universities worldwide, including many of the world's most prestigious business schools, participated in this year's competition.
