The Physical Activity, Physical Education, Health and Sport (PAPESH) Research Centre

PAPESH Research Centre 

The Physical Activity, Physical Education, Health and Sport (PAPESH) Research Centre is located at Reykjavik University and aims to increase and improve sports science research and apply it to Icelandic society.

The research centre includes researchers from two academic departments. Six of these have PhD degrees. The researchers develop six research lines where senior researchers train young researchers (MSc and PhD Students) and promote their scientific and academic careers. 

The Research Centre looks to do the best research possible. For that, we collaborate with researchers from other countries and universities.

Masters programs and thesis

MSc at RU

Reykjavik University offers the MSc Exercise Science and Coaching. This Master is unique in Iceland.

MSc in Exercise Science and Coaching is intended for those who wish to specialize in the coaching of athletes in competitive and high-performance sports as well as in research in the field of sports science. The program is composed of courses covering, e.g. sports research and research methods, organization of training, theory of training, and the role of the trainer. The program also covers how to maximize athletic ability with training based on the premises of physiology, exercise science, psychology, ethics, nutrition, tactics, and techniques.

MEd at RU

The Reykjavik University offers the MEd Sports and Health Education.

MEd in Sport and Health Education is intended for those who wish to specialize in health training and sport education. The program is composed of courses covering, e.g. sports pedagogy, preventive value of exercise, influencing factors of health, organization and role of the health trainer/instructor. Also covered is how quality of life for people of all ages and abilities can be maximized with organized exercise based on the premises of pedagogy, psychology, nutrition, sports science, and public health science.

Sports lab, services and further information

The Sports Lab offers students in undergraduate and graduate studies of Sports Science and Biomedical Engineering the opportunity to perform various tests and measurements. The facility is equipped with many widely used devices VO2 max treadmill and gas analyser, sEMG, heart rate monitors, pedometers, Actigraph accelerometers, anthropometric kit, goniometers, dynamometers and high-speed cameras to name a few. The Sports Lab is currently located inside RU on the 2nd floor, room M210. The person responsible for the laboratory is Sveinn Þorgeirsson.
