Energy Research Connected to Iceland, Industry and the Wider World

Research at ISE

Research is an important part of the Iceland School of Energy experience. Through Reykjavík University and collaboration with industry, research institutions and international partners, ISE students engage with questions across sustainable energy systems, technologies and policy.

For master’s students, research comes together most directly through the thesis. Students investigate a defined research problem with academic supervision and may work with external organisations, research groups or industry partners depending on the project.

Research Areas

Research connected to ISE spans multiple disciplines, reflecting the technical, environmental and economic challenges involved in developing sustainable energy systems.

Geothermal Energy
Research in geothermal resources, exploration, reservoir systems, utilisation and the role of geothermal energy within wider energy systems.
Wind & Hydropower
Research in renewable electricity generation, resource assessment, power production and the integration of renewable resources.
Electric Power
Research in power systems, electricity networks, renewable integration, system operation and emerging electrical technologies.
Energy Economics & Policy
Research examining energy markets, policy, regulation, investment, energy security and transition pathways.
Energy Systems & Technologies
Research connecting technologies and systems across areas including hydrogen, energy storage, electrification, carbon management and emerging energy solutions.

    Student Theses

    The master’s thesis is where ISE students bring together the knowledge developed throughout their programme and apply it to a focused research question. Topics may come from faculty research, industry collaboration, research organisations or a student’s own area of interest.
