Everything you need to prepare, apply and plan your move to Iceland
Applying to the Iceland School of Energy is straightforward. Before you begin, check that your academic background meets the requirements for your chosen programme, prepare your supporting documents, and make sure you have a realistic plan for tuition and living costs in Iceland. Applications are submitted through Reykjavík University’s online application system.

Entry requirements vary by programme. Review the academic prerequisites for the MSc you are interested in before applying.
Sustainable Energy Science
For applicants from natural sciences, geosciences, environmental sciences, engineering or other relevant quantitative fields. Your previous studies should include the required mathematics and science background.
Sustainable Energy Engineering
For applicants with an engineering or closely related technical degree. You should have the required foundation in mathematics, physics and engineering subjects before beginning the programme.
Electric Power Engineering
For applicants with a background in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering field. You should have the required foundation in mathematics, physics and engineering subjects before beginning the programme.

What you need to apply
Before starting your application, prepare the main documents needed to demonstrate your academic background and eligibility.

- Degree certificate or evidence of expected completion

- English-language evidence, where required
- Passport or national ID
- ISE programme-specific prerequisite information, where applicable
Applicants from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA are required to pay an application processing fee through the application portal.

Tuition and Financial Planning
Studying at ISE requires planning for both tuition and the cost of living in Iceland.
Tuition fees
The latest published tuition fees are for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may change. Fall 2027 applicants should use current figures for planning until Reykjavík University publishes the 2027–2028 tuition rates.
Cost of living in Iceland
Iceland has a high cost of living. International applicants should prepare a realistic financial plan before accepting an offer and moving to Iceland.
International students must be prepared to finance both tuition and living costs in Iceland. Scholarship funding is limited and should not be assumed.
Scholarships and funding
Scholarship funding is available in limited cases, but students should not rely on receiving a scholarship to finance their studies at ISE. Before accepting your place, make sure you have a realistic plan for financing all four semesters of tuition and your living costs in Iceland.
ISE and Reykjavík University funding
Some tuition scholarships or reductions may be available to eligible graduate students based on academic achievement and available funding. Where an applicant is being considered for an ISE scholarship, information about the award will be provided as part of the admissions process.
External scholarships and sponsored funding
Depending on your citizenship and background, you may also be eligible for funding from governments, foundations or other organisations.
Student finance from your home country
Scholarships are not the only source of support. Depending on where you live, you may be able to use national student-finance programmes for study at Reykjavík University.
Other ways to fund your studies
Applicants also finance their studies through:
- Personal or family savings and education funds
- Employer sponsorship
- Government sponsorship
- Scholarships and grants from their home country
- Education or private bank loans available to them

Residence and relocation
Requirements for moving to Iceland depend on your citizenship.
After graduation
Non-EEA/EFTA graduates who complete a university degree in Iceland may be eligible to renew their student residence permit for up to 18 months while seeking employment related to their qualifications in Iceland. Immigration rules can change, so students should always check the latest requirements directly with the Directorate of Immigration.
