Björn Þór Jónsson nýr prófessor

Dr. Björn Þór Jónsson hefur hlotið framgang í stöðu prófessors við tölvunarfræðideild Háskólans í Reykjavík eftir mat alþjóðlegrar hæfisnefndar. Björn er virtur fræðimaður og leiðandi sérfræðingur á sínu sviði og hefur sinnt stjórnendastöðum bæði sem deildarforseti tölvunarfræðideildar við Háskólann í Reykjavík og aðstoðar deildarforseti á sviði menntunar við tölvunarfræðideild IT University í Kaupmannahöfn.

Það er einróma álit alþjóðlegrar hæfisnefndar að Dr. Björn Þór standist allar þær kröfur sem gerðar eru um framgang prófessora við tölvunarfræðideild HR.

Björn Þór lauk doktorsnámi í tölvunarfræði frá  University of Maryland árið 1999 og BSc prófi í tölvunarfræði frá Háskóla Íslands árið 1991. Sérsvið hans er gagnasafnsfræði og hefur hann unnið að umfangsmiklum rannsóknum á því sviði.

Dr. Björn Þór Jónsson has been promoted to the position of a full professor within the Department of Computer Science. Members of the evaluation committee were: Professor Christian S. Jensen (Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University), Professor Letizia Tanca (Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano), and Professor Yngvi Björnsson (Department of Computer Science at Reykjavik University, the chair).

The committee concluded that Dr. Björn Þór Jónsson fulfills the RU criteria in research, teaching, and service for the position of a full professor. The committee concluded that: 

“The large and varied scope of his research, which spans the realms of multimedia data retrieval and recommendation, multimedia data analytics, performance of database systems, and data management on new hardware, is combined with a rare capacity of combining theoretical research with system-oriented results. He has excelled in bridging the theory-to-application gap within his research area through high-quality and cutting-edge research, the building of demanding state-of-the-art software systems, and successful spin-off commercialization. Moreover, his publication record shows papers in highly competitive venues and extensive service to the scientific community, including several key roles demonstrating his full-fledged participation in the international academic community."

Furthermore the committee evaluation stated that Dr. Jónsson has a stellar service record, taking on leadership roles in the academic departments he has worked (notably the Dean of the School of Computer Science, Reykjavik University, and the Deputy Head for Education at the Computer Science Department of the IT University in Copenhagen) and in his research community at large.
