Dr. Gunnar Þór Pétursson skipaður deildarforseti lagadeildar HR

Dr. Gunnar Þór Pétursson, prófessor við lagadeild Háskólans í Reykjavík, hefur verið skipaður deildarforseti lagadeildar HR. Gunnar Þór lauk doktorsprófi í lögum frá lagadeild Háskólans í Lundi árið 2014, LLM-prófi frá sama háskóla árið 1998 og Cand. jur-gráðu frá lagadeild Háskóla Íslands árið 1997. Gunnar Þór hlaut lögmannsréttindi árið 2002.

Gunnar Þór hóf störf við lagadeild HR sem stundakennari árið 2005, hefur verið með fasta stöðu við deildina frá árinu 2008 og hlaut framgang í prófessorsstöðu árið 2016. Þá er hann jafnframt gestaprófessor við lagadeild Parísarháskóla, Panthéon-Assas (Paris II), frá árinu 2017, og á þessari önn gestaprófessor við lagadeild Háskólans í Lille. Gunnar Þór er nefndarmaður í Fjármálaeftirlitsnefnd Seðlabanka Íslands og Ad-Hoc dómari við EFTA-dómstólinn (frá 1. júlí 2022).

Rannsóknir Gunnars Þórs eru aðallega á sviði Evrópuréttar, EES-samningsins og mannréttinda. Gunnar Þór hefur birt fjölda ritrýndra fræðigreina á innlendum og erlendum vettvangi og haldið erindi á alþjóðlegum ráðstefnum, og hefur meðal annars fjallað um grundvallarréttindi í Evrópurétti, svo sem áhrif mannréttindareglna og annarra meginreglna í Evrópurétti.

„Það eru forréttindi að fá að starfa við lagadeild HR og ég tek við keflinu á spennandi tímum. Kennsla í lögfræði þarf að taka mið af því sem er að gerast í kringum okkur, svo sem umhverfisvernd, hraðri þróun á stafræna sviðinu, gervigreind o.fl. Á sama tíma þarf lögfræðin að vera trú grundvallarstoðunum og er því bæði framsækin og íhaldssöm fræðigrein. Þetta erum við vel meðvituð um í lagadeild HR og erum sífellt að huga að framþróun í kennslu og rannsóknum,“ segir Gunnar Þór.

Gunnar Þór tekur við starfi deildarforseta lagadeildar í dag, 12. apríl.

Dr. Gunnar Þór Pétursson has been appointed Dean of the Department of Law at Reykjavik University. Gunnar received his Dr. juris degree from Lund University in Sweden in 2014, LL.M from Lund University in 1998 and Cand.
juris degree from the University of Iceland in 1997. He received his District Court Attorney’s Rights in 2002.

Gunnar Þór started working as a part-time teacher at RU’s Department of Law in 2005. He has held a permanent position at the Department since 2008 and was promoted to Professor of Law in 2016. He is also a visiting professor at the Department of Law at University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas since 2017 and during this spring semester he is a visiting professor at the Department of Law at the University of Lille. Gunnar Þór is a member of the Financial Supervision Committee of the Central Bank of Iceland and an Ad-Hoc judge at the EFTA court (since 1 July 2022).

Gunnar’s research is mainly focused on EU law, the EEA Agreement and fundamental rights. Gunnar Þór has published a number of peer-reviewed articles both in Iceland and internationally and has given talks at international conferences. He has discussed, among other things, fundamental rights in EU and EEA law, such as the impact of fundamental human rights principles and other general principles in EU/EEA law.

The legal education must respect and take into consideration current developments, such as environmental protection, the fast-growing digital development, artificial intelligence and more. At the same time, legal education needs to stay true to its foundations, and therefore to remain both progressive and conservative at the same time. At RU's Department of Law we are aware of this, and we are always looking for ways to further develop our teaching and research methods,” says Gunnar Þór

Gunnar Þór starts as Dean today, 12th of April.
