Abstract:
Ljósafossstöð is one of Iceland’s oldest hydropower plants (HPP), making it both historically
important for the country and unique to Landsvirkjun. To highlight its uniqueness, the HPP
is used as a showcase during the summer months for locals and tourists. The relatively
high age makes the power plant sensitive, so modifications need to be carefully planned,
considering the original equipment. The governor system was renewed about 25 years ago,
and maintenance has increased over the years, necessitating the importance of executing
another renewal soon.
This study evaluates the suitability of high-pressure versus low-pressure hydraulic governor
systems for turbine units 1 and 2 in Ljósafossstöð without removing the old showcase governor
system. The HPPs operated by Landsvirkjun all have high-pressure or low-pressure hydraulic
governor systems. Data was available to make most of the necessary analysis for each system.
The analysis was performed using existing data from current high-pressure and low-pressure
systems in Ljósafossstöð and Írafossstöð, another HPP operated by Landsvirkjun. The
following key factors were of focus: maintenance history, design lifetime, equipment and
other costs, layout and location, utilization of hydraulic oil and environmental impacts, and
reaction time for each system were analyzed. The results revealed that the high-pressure
system performed better for all key factors except maintenance and lifetime. However, as
the low-pressure systems are semi-custom or custom-designed, the cost estimations for low
pressure systems remain unknown as no standard unit is available. For this reason, the
availability of spare parts is limited. Overall, the high-pressure system is recommended as
the new hydraulic governor system for Ljósafossstöð based on the results of generally higher
scores when comparing key factors
