Exploiting Dynamic Electricity Prices with an Energy-Aware Runtime System for Heterogeneous HPC Clusters

To all computer systems, electrical energy is the most important operating resource. The sensible and conscious use of energy resources is motivated by various factors and depends on the respective systems and their individual application: from "smart dust" and battery-powered mobile systems to large-scale high-performance computing (HPC) clusters that operate under thermal constraints.
This talk presents energy-aware programming techniques that originate in static and dynamic program analyses, and support the design of energy-aware system software ahead of runtime. Tobridge the gap towards execution time, the talk further discusses Albatross, a HPC runtime system that ensures cost effectiveness for operating heterogeneous HPC clusters in the age of dynamic electricity prices.
Biographical sketch: Dr. Timo Hönig is Assistant Professor at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany where he received his Ph.D. in 2017. In the System Software Groupat FAU, his research focuses on energy-aware systems. He explores techniques for energy-aware programming, the design of energy-efficient system software, and the energy demand of high-performance computing systems.
As senior software engineer and research fellow at SUSE LinuxGmbH in Nürnberg (Germany) and in the Embedded Hardware Development Group at IBM Research Böblingen (Germany) he gained ten years of industry experience. At the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) he received his Computer Science degree. As an active advocate for free and open-source software,Timo contributes articles to the Linux Magazine, and he is amember of ACM and GI.
