Academic research has advanced our understanding of quantum computing and the technologies needed to build quantum computers for over 30 years. Over the past decade, the field has increasingly moved from academic laboratories into industry, with major technology companies establishing dedicated teams and numerous startups emerging. Today, industry plays a central role in developing quantum computers, with systems containing hundreds of physical qubits being built using a variety of hardware technologies.

While significant progress has been made in controlling qubits and implementing quantum operations, major challenges remain in error correction and scaling quantum processors towards fault-tolerant quantum computing.

IQM Quantum Computers is one of the leading companies developing superconducting quantum computers. Headquartered in Finland, the company operates its own fabrication facility and has an international presence, with operations across Europe, the United States and Asia. With hundreds of employees spanning a wide range of disciplines, IQM illustrates the breadth of expertise required to develop and deliver these complex systems.

This lecture will offer an insider’s perspective on the quantum computing industry, with a particular focus on the design of quantum processors. The processor design team works at the intersection of quantum physics, engineering and software, developing new processor architectures and circuits in close collaboration with fabrication and measurement teams. The lecture will explore the challenges involved in translating ideas from quantum physics into working hardware, the skills required to tackle these problems, and the technical questions that will shape the next generation of quantum computers.
